Occupation Transfers Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya to Detention Under "Unlawful Combatant" Law

The Al-Mezan Center for Human Rights reported that the Israeli occupation has transferred Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, to detention under the "unlawful combatant" law, instead of a regular trial.

The center’s lawyer revealed that Dr. Abu Safiya has been subjected to torture and ill-treatment.

The center indicated that this decision followed a visit by the lawyer to Dr. Abu Safiya at Ofer prison on February 11, 2025, where it was revealed that he had endured torture and mistreatment.

The center stressed that classifying Dr. Abu Safiya as an "unlawful combatant" is an arbitrary, dangerous, and illegal procedure, aimed at revenge and demonstrates the failure of the prosecution to prove its claims and accusations against the detainee.

The center condemned the arbitrary measures against Dr. Abu Safiya and other detainees being held as hostages under the "unlawful combatant" law and called on the international community and UN mechanisms to take measures to ensure the release of Dr. Abu Safiya, as well as other doctors and medical personnel.

The Israeli forces arrested Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, on December 27, 2024, and published a photo showing him walking amidst the rubble of the hospital, which had been destroyed and burned by the Israeli military, with tanks in the background.

Dr. Abu Safiya holds a master's degree and a Palestinian board certification in pediatrics and neonatology.

Dr. Abu Safiya’s family had previously revealed that he had been subjected to severe torture and starvation in Israeli detention.
