Israeli Occupation Labels Detained Palestinian Doctor as “Unlawful Combatant” to Deny Fair Trial

The Israeli occupation has classified Dr. Hossam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, as an "unlawful combatant," depriving him of a fair trial and legal defence. Arrested on 27 December 2024 while carrying out his medical duties, he was held incommunicado for 47 days and subjected to torture, according to Al-Mezan Center for Human Rights.

On 12 February 2025, Israeli authorities decided to detain him under the Unlawful Combatant Law, bypassing the judicial process. This law strips detainees of the right to know the charges against them and challenge evidence, allowing detention for up to six months with possible extensions.

Al-Mezan condemned this action as a form of retaliation and an attempt to evade legal scrutiny, warning that it sets a dangerous precedent for targeting medical professionals. The organisation called on the international community to demand Abu Safiya’s release and ensure the protection of humanitarian personnel in accordance with international law.

Since 7 October 2023, Palestinian detainees have faced severe rights violations, with many subjected to inhumane treatment under the guise of security measures.
