Israel has postponed the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners as part of a ceasefire agreement with Hamas, following the return of six Israeli detainees on Saturday, February 22. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to hold consultations to decide on the next steps, including the release of 602 Palestinian prisoners.
Under the first phase of the ceasefire, which began on January 19, 33 Israeli detainees are to be exchanged for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. Only four Israeli detainees remain to be released.
The delay has sparked protests from families of Israeli detainees, demanding Tel Aviv adhere to the agreement. Hamas has called for full compliance with the ceasefire terms, warning that violations could delay further releases.
Hamas spokesperson Abdul Latif al-Qanou also highlighted Gaza’s dire humanitarian crisis, urging mediators to pressure Israel for relief efforts.
