The Gaza Municipality has appealed for international assistance to repair vital sewage infrastructure, which is now in a state of dire disrepair. In a statement released on Thursday, the municipality underscored the worsening health crisis in Gaza City, with the potential to lead to life-threatening diseases due to the lack of functioning sewage lines, stations, and related facilities.
The municipality highlighted the absence of urgent projects to address the deteriorating sewage systems, which has contributed to the dangerous leakage of wastewater into the streets. This ongoing issue exacerbates both the environmental and public health crises facing the city. The shortage of pipes, spare parts, and the need to dig through asphalt layers has only compounded the disaster, particularly in areas that sustained extensive infrastructure damage during the occupation.
In February, the Union of Municipalities of Gaza Strip launched the "Phoenix of Gaza" initiative, aimed at rebuilding the region after the devastating war that left a deep mark on daily life. According to the Gaza Government Media Office, the occupation destroyed large portions of the infrastructure, including 655,000 meters of sewage networks and over 2 million meters of road networks, further crippling the region's ability to cope with the crisis.
