A damning UN report has accused Israel of committing "genocidal acts" in Gaza, citing the systematic destruction of healthcare infrastructure and severe violations against Palestinians. The findings, released on 13 March by the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry, reveal that Israel’s war on Gaza, which began on 7 October 2023, has targeted reproductive health facilities, crippling essential services and exacerbating a humanitarian catastrophe.
The report states that Israel’s actions, including blocking medical supplies and destroying hospitals, have partially destroyed the reproductive capacity of Palestinians—a crime classified as genocide under international law. These measures have led to a sharp rise in maternal and neonatal deaths, with Gaza’s healthcare system on the brink of collapse.
Navi Pillay, head of the Commission, emphasised that these violations have caused irreversible harm to Palestinians’ physical and mental health, with long-term consequences for fertility and reproductive rights. The report also condemns Israel’s use of forced public stripping and sexual violence as punitive measures against Palestinians.
Hamas has welcomed the report, calling it evidence of Israel’s "genocide" and systematic violations of humanitarian norms. Since the war began, over 48,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed, and more than 111,000 injured.
Despite a temporary ceasefire in January, Israel’s ongoing blockade and restrictions continue to deepen Gaza’s suffering. The international community is urged to act swiftly to hold Israel accountable and address the devastating conditions faced by Palestinians.
