In Gaza, journalists face relentless violence, with Israeli forces actively targeting them in an attempt to silence their reports. Hemam Al-Hattab, a journalist and father, has suffered unimaginable loss. On January 16, 2025, his nine-year-old daughter, Amal, was martyred in an Israeli airstrike on their home in Al-Shuja'iyya. Amal, who longed for peace, had dreamed of visiting the beach once the war ended—yet the war ended her life instead.
Despite losing his daughter and enduring the destruction of his home, Al-Hattab remains determined to continue his journalistic work. "Israel targets journalists to silence us, but we will not be silenced," he stated. His message reflects the grim reality faced by Palestinians, with the Israeli warplanes bombing not only civilians but also media institutions.
Since October 7, 2023, over 166,000 Palestinians have been killed or wounded, and 210 journalists have been martyred. Still, journalists in Gaza persist, defying death to expose the truth of their people's suffering. "We will continue our work," Al-Hattab vowed, even as he faces the ongoing threat of violence.
