Shireen Abu Akleh: Truth Pierces the Silence in New York Documentary

A powerful investigative documentary premiered this week in New York, breaking through years of silence and obfuscation surrounding the killing of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh. Titled Who Killed Shireen?, the film brings forward damning evidence that directly names the Israeli soldier responsible for her death—Alon Skagiu—during a 2022 military raid in Jenin.

The film, produced by Zeteo and led by investigative journalist Dion Nissenbaum, uncovers not only the identity of the shooter, but also the calculated efforts by both Israeli and American officials to bury the truth. It exposes how diplomatic manoeuvres and political complicity tried to shield the perpetrator from accountability, denying justice to Shireen’s family, colleagues, and the Palestinian people.

In a cruel twist of fate, the film reveals that Skagiu himself was killed last year during another Israeli incursion into Jenin, this time by Palestinian fighters. This irony is not lost on those who continue to mourn Shireen, a veteran reporter whose voice carried the stories of the occupied West Bank to the world.

Despite numerous investigations by international media and rights organisations confirming that Shireen was shot by Israeli forces while clearly wearing a press vest, no one has ever been held to account. The documentary lifts the curtain on the deliberate suppression of facts and the enduring impunity that surrounds the killing of Palestinian journalists.

Shireen Abu Akleh’s life was taken on 11 May 2022, but this film offers a renewed call for justice—one that Palestinians have never stopped demanding.
