In the latest phase of the ongoing conflict, the Zeitoun district of Gaza City has been subjected to extensive destruction, with over 1,500 homes demolished since early August. This area, once a vibrant residential and commercial hub, now lies in ruins, with no buildings remaining in the southern part of the neighbourhood. The demolition efforts have been carried out using a combination of heavy machinery, explosive-laden robots, and drones, resulting in daily detonations that have left the area unrecognisable.
The scale of the devastation has forced approximately 80% of the local population to flee their homes. Many have sought refuge in other parts of Gaza City, including the western and northern districts, while others have been displaced to overcrowded tent cities in the southern region. Despite these efforts, the humanitarian situation remains dire, with widespread shortages of food, water, and medical supplies. International aid has been severely limited, and the cessation of daily humanitarian pauses has exacerbated the crisis.
As the conflict continues, the international community faces increasing pressure to address the humanitarian disaster unfolding in Gaza. The destruction of entire neighbourhoods, such as Zeitoun, has not only displaced thousands but also erased the cultural and historical fabric of the region. The ongoing military operations and the challenges in delivering aid highlight the urgent need for a concerted international response to alleviate the suffering of the affected populations.
