Starvation as a Weapon: Israel Tightens the Siege on Gaza

The blockade of Gaza has reached catastrophic levels, with aid deliveries falling to a fraction of what is needed to sustain the enclave’s population. Figures show that just over 1,800 trucks were allowed in during September, barely ten per cent of the minimum required, leaving 2.4 million people on the brink of famine. More than half of them are children.

The scarcity is compounded by the near-total closure of crossings and the systematic denial of essential goods, from basic foods such as eggs, meat, dairy and vegetables to vital medical supplies. Even when limited shipments are permitted, chaos at the crossings and deliberate restrictions have ensured that supplies often fail to reach those most in need. The result is a manufactured hunger crisis in which over 95 per cent of families are unable to afford what little food is available on the market.

As the war drags on and infrastructure collapses, international concern has grown over the deliberate use of starvation as a tool of war. Calls are mounting for urgent intervention to secure safe humanitarian access and hold those responsible for this policy of enforced deprivation to account. For civilians trapped inside Gaza, the crisis is no longer a looming threat, it is an everyday reality.
