Ceasefire in Gaza Sparks Regional Caution Over Israeli Intentions

Iran has urged the international community to remain vigilant following the announcement of a ceasefire in Gaza, warning of potential “deception and violations” by Israel. The Iranian Foreign Ministry reaffirmed its support for any initiative aimed at ending the genocidal war in Gaza, ensuring the withdrawal of occupation forces, enabling humanitarian aid, freeing Palestinian prisoners, and restoring the fundamental rights of the people.

In its statement, the ministry recalled Iran’s diplomatic efforts over the past two years through regional channels, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and the United Nations to pressure Israel and its allies to halt the war and occupation. The ministry stressed that a ceasefire does not absolve states or international bodies from their legal and moral responsibilities to pursue justice for war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity committed in Gaza, ending decades of impunity for the occupying authorities.

Ali Akbar Velayati, advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader, also cautioned that the Gaza ceasefire could have wider regional repercussions, hinting at implications for Iraq, Yemen, and Lebanon. The Palestinian resistance, meanwhile, welcomed the ceasefire agreement brokered through indirect negotiations, which calls for an end to the genocidal war, Israeli troop withdrawal, the entry of humanitarian aid, and the exchange of Israeli prisoners for Palestinian detainees. Yet, Palestinian leaders warned of the risk that Israel might renege on the terms, recalling previous breaches in 2023 and earlier this year.
