Mustafa al-Barghouti, Secretary-General of the Palestinian National Initiative, condemned Israel’s parliamentary approval of a preliminary bill to annex large parts of the occupied West Bank, calling it a “calculated conspiracy” to erase Palestinian presence and sovereignty. The proposed legislation, narrowly passed in its first reading, seeks to extend Israeli authority over key settlements, including Ma’ale Adumim near East Jerusalem, in what critics see as a clear breach of international law.
Al-Barghouti accused both ruling and opposition parties of complicity through their votes or silence, arguing that the decision exposes the true face of an entrenched colonial project. He urged the international community , especially Arab and Muslim nations, to impose sanctions, asserting that those still speaking of a “two-state solution” have no moral ground left if they continue to tolerate annexation.
He also denounced normalisation agreements with Israel, saying they have lost all legitimacy in the face of ongoing annexations of Jerusalem, the Golan Heights, and the West Bank, as well as the genocidal war waged in Gaza. According to al-Barghouti, these policies are designed to permanently dispossess Palestinians and eliminate any chance of justice or self-determination.
He concluded that condemnation alone is meaningless without decisive international action, economic, political, and legal, to hold Israel accountable and end what he described as a systematic effort to rewrite the geography and identity of Palestine.
