Small gains against hunger in Gaza are proving precarious, as daily life remains shaped by devastation and deprivation. International health officials say that while no part of the territory is currently categorised as being in full famine, the margin between survival and catastrophe is perilously thin.
The collapse of basic infrastructure, the loss of livelihoods and the near-destruction of local food production continue to define conditions on the ground. Humanitarian work is further constrained by severe limits on access and movement, leaving families exposed to shortages that can rapidly worsen. Health specialists warn that progress achieved through sporadic aid deliveries can be reversed at any moment.
Children and mothers are bearing the heaviest burden. Tens of thousands of young children and pregnant or breastfeeding women are expected to face acute malnutrition in the coming months. Only about half of Gaza’s medical facilities are even partially operational, many lacking essential medicines, equipment and power. Health leaders are urging the swift entry of medical supplies and temporary hospital units to prevent an avoidable surge in deaths linked to hunger and disease.
