In August 2024, a group of activists targeted the UK factory of Elbit Systems, Israel’s largest arms manufacturer, causing significant disruption to key operations and estimated damages of around £1 million. The action, framed as direct protest, was part of a broader campaign opposing the UK’s hosting of companies involved in military operations abroad.
The activists were arrested under Britain’s stringent anti-terror laws and detained for over 18 months before appearing in court at the Woolwich Crown Court last month. Six of the first group, known as the “Filton 24,” faced charges relating to aggravated burglary and violent disorder, among other offences.
After weeks of deliberation, the jury acquitted all six or failed to reach verdicts on the charges, with one activist remaining in custody on bail. The remaining five were released to cheers from supporters outside the court. Families expressed relief and gratitude, highlighting the harsh conditions of detention endured by their loved ones during prolonged imprisonment.
The verdicts are seen as a significant boost to Palestine Action’s campaign against UK-based arms firms connected to Israel. Legal challenges remain regarding the designation of the group as a terrorist organisation, but the rulings have bolstered morale among activists calling for the removal of Israeli arms companies from the UK.
