Francesca Albanese Condemns “Toxic” Attacks After Calls for Resignation Over Palestine Remarks

Francesca Albanese, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories, has condemned what she described as coordinated attacks that have affected both her professional work and personal life. Several European countries, including Germany, France, and Italy, called for her resignation following her criticism of Israel, alleging her statements were controversial and inappropriate. Albanese said her words were repeatedly misrepresented and taken out of context, causing significant stress to her and her family.

The controversy intensified after Israel’s permanent mission to the UN in Geneva formally accused Albanese of breaching UN conduct codes, claiming she undermined the credibility and moral authority of the organization and allegedly made anti-Semitic remarks. Albanese has consistently denied these allegations. France’s UN envoy also emphasized that all mandate holders must exercise restraint and discretion, highlighting the delicate balance required for independent UN experts.

Albanese further criticized sanctions imposed on her by the United States, describing them as part of a broader effort to weaken international accountability mechanisms. UN Human Rights Council President Sudharto R. Suryodipuro expressed concern over personal attacks on mandate holders, reaffirming that their independence is essential for the credibility and effectiveness of the Council. The episode highlights the mounting pressures faced by international human rights officials working on politically sensitive issues.
