Palestinian Women Strengthen Presence in Local Elections Despite Occupation Pressures

As preparations advance for the 2026 local elections across Palestinian communities, efforts are intensifying to ensure women play a greater role in municipal governance despite the limitations imposed by the ongoing occupation. Electoral authorities have emphasised that women’s participation is vital to achieving balanced representation and sustaining democratic practices at the local level.

Recent initiatives have sought to address social and institutional barriers that have historically limited women’s political engagement. Public awareness campaigns, training programmes, and cooperation with civil society organisations have been launched to encourage women to stand as candidates and to participate actively in electoral processes. Women already represent nearly half of registered voters, while their presence among candidates continues to expand, with dozens running for municipal and village council positions.

Statistics from the electoral process indicate that women account for roughly a third of candidates on municipal council lists and nearly a quarter of those contesting village councils. Several electoral lists are also headed by women, reflecting gradual but significant progress in leadership roles. Within the electoral administration itself, women make up more than half of the workforce responsible for organising and overseeing the vote.

Organisers have called on political factions, candidates, and community institutions to protect women’s electoral rights and ensure they can campaign and vote freely. Complaints mechanisms remain available for women who encounter intimidation or attempts to obstruct their participation, underscoring ongoing efforts to safeguard democratic engagement even under the constraints of occupation.
