An international flotilla seeking to reach Gaza has reported being confronted at sea, with participants describing electronic disruption and direct engagement by Israeli naval forces. The group, known as the Steadfastness Fleet, said its vessels were approached by fast military boats whose crews identified themselves as Israeli, while laser beams and weapons were directed at those on board. Communications were reportedly jammed, prompting an emergency distress signal to be transmitted.
The convoy had set sail earlier this month from Barcelona before regrouping in Sicily, where additional boats and activists joined the initiative. Organisers said the mission aimed to challenge the blockade on Gaza and deliver humanitarian assistance to a population facing acute shortages after months of genocidal war. By the time of departure into the Mediterranean, the flotilla had expanded to dozens of vessels, with further support arriving at sea, including an environmental campaign ship backing the effort.
This marks a renewed attempt following a similar mission last year that ended with the interception of vessels in international waters and the detention of hundreds of activists, now referred to as prisoners. Participants in the current voyage say the risks were anticipated but insist the humanitarian objective remains unchanged. Developments unfolded as Israeli leadership reportedly held urgent consultations concerning the flotilla, reflecting the sensitivity surrounding efforts to reach Gaza by sea.
