European Union spokesperson, Peter Stano, confirmed that the recent Israeli decision to approve building about 800 new settlement units in the West Bank contradicts international law and further undermines the prospects for a viable two-state solution.
In a press release, the EU called on the Israeli government to suspend the ongoing bidding process for building housing units for a completely new settlement in Givat HaMatos.
Israel was, repeatedly, called on to end all settlement activities and to dismantle outposts that had been established since March 2001.
Stano stressed that the position of the European Union remains consistent, which is that the settlements are illegal under international law.
The European Union renewed its call on the parties to avoid unilateral steps that could undermine the "two-state solution".
Besides, he called on the Israeli government to reverse these decisions and show leadership to rebuild the trust between the two parties for the eventual resumption of meaningful Israeli-Palestinian negotiations.
