SAFA — Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of continuing to perpetrate “genocide” in Gaza, denouncing international double standards and calling for stronger commitment to international law and multilateral institutions.

Addressing the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York on Wednesday, Sánchez said his government “unequivocally condemns the genocide that Netanyahu continues to perpetrate in Gaza,” delivering one of the strongest condemnations of Israel by a European leader.

Sánchez also criticised powers that wage illegal wars, kill civilians and disregard the suffering of millions while undermining the United Nations and the multilateral international order.

The Spanish leader argued that Madrid applies the same principles to conflicts around the world, including Gaza and Ukraine, and stressed the importance of international law and institutions in holding those responsible for violations accountable.

He also warned against abandoning the founding principles of the United Nations and called for renewed commitment to multilateralism amid mounting wars and international crises.

Sánchez’s remarks reflect Spain’s increasingly critical position towards Israel’s actions in Gaza. In May 2024, Spain formally recognised the State of Palestine alongside Ireland and Norway, drawing strong criticism from the Israeli government.

The Spanish government has since taken further measures against Israel and repeatedly pressed for greater international action over Gaza. Sánchez has consistently described Israel’s actions in the enclave as genocide and called for an end to the war and unrestricted humanitarian access.

His latest remarks come as world leaders gather in New York for the UN General Assembly, where Gaza and the wider Middle East crisis have featured prominently in discussions over international law, accountability and the future of the Palestinian territories.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who rejects accusations that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, is also expected to address the General Assembly and defend Israel’s military actions.
