Two Children Drown Within 24 Hours in Gaza as Water Tanks and Sewage Wells Threaten Young Lives

SAFA — A two-year-old Palestinian boy drowned in a water tank at Al-Maghazi refugee camp in central Gaza on Friday, in another tragedy highlighting the growing dangers facing children amid widespread destruction of infrastructure and essential public services across the Gaza Strip.

According to local and medical sources, Mohammed Abu Shahada, 2, had been missing for nearly two hours before family members and residents found him dead inside a water tank following an extensive search.

His body was transferred to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah.

The tragedy came just one day after another Palestinian child, Bahaa Jundiya, died on Thursday after falling into an open sewage well at Al-Jundi camp in the Al-Rimal neighborhood of western Gaza City.

Palestinian Civil Defense crews attempted to rescue him, but he did not survive.

Two Tragedies Expose Growing Dangers to Gaza's Children

The two deaths, occurring less than 24 hours apart, reveal another dimension of the daily dangers facing children in Gaza.

Water tanks, exposed sewage wells and open pits have become serious hazards across the Strip as the destruction of water and sewage networks, roads and public facilities has left residential areas increasingly unsafe.

These dangers have turned ordinary surroundings into potential death traps, threatening the safety of residents, particularly young children.

The risks are worsening as efforts to repair damaged infrastructure remain stalled and essential equipment and resources needed to secure hazardous sites are in short supply.

With dangerous openings left exposed and damaged facilities awaiting repairs, children across Gaza face an increased risk of drowning and falling into uncovered wells and pits.

The two tragedies underscore the mounting challenges of protecting children's lives and safety amid the destruction of Gaza's essential infrastructure.
