Gaza Volunteer Surgeon Adam Hamawy Wins US House Seat as Tlaib and Carson Secure Reelection

SAFA — Egyptian American physician Adam Hamawy, who treated Palestinians wounded during Israel's war on the Gaza Strip, has been elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, while Democratic Representatives Rashida Tlaib and André Carson have secured reelection in Tuesday's midterm elections, according to the Associated Press.

Hamawy, a Democrat, won New Jersey's 12th Congressional District, succeeding Democratic Representative Bonnie Watson Coleman, who decided not to seek another term. His victory would make him the first Muslim elected to represent New Jersey in Congress.

Born in Egypt and brought to the United States as an infant, Hamawy built his career as a plastic and reconstructive surgeon and served in the U.S. Army before drawing national attention for his participation in a humanitarian medical mission to Gaza.

During the mission, he treated wounded Palestinians as Gaza's healthcare system struggled under Israeli attacks, severe shortages of medical supplies, and widespread destruction of medical facilities.

His experience treating Palestinian patients became a defining part of his public profile, shaping his criticism of Israel's military campaign and his calls for greater protection of Palestinian civilians.

Running in a heavily Democratic district, Hamawy campaigned on expanding access to healthcare, supporting military veterans, and strengthening oversight of U.S. military assistance in conflict zones.

Rashida Tlaib Wins Another Term in Michigan

In Michigan, the Associated Press projected that Democratic Representative Rashida Tlaib won reelection in the state's 12th Congressional District.

The daughter of Palestinian immigrants, Tlaib made history in 2018 as one of the first two Muslim women elected to the U.S. Congress.

She has remained one of Washington's most outspoken advocates for Palestinian rights, repeatedly condemning Israel's military campaign in Gaza and calling for an end to U.S. military support for Israel.

Tlaib has also pushed for stronger protections for Palestinian civilians and greater accountability for violations of international humanitarian law.

André Carson Secures Reelection in Indiana

In Indiana, Democratic Representative André Carson won reelection in the state's 7th Congressional District, extending his congressional service, which began with a special election in 2008.

Carson, an African American Muslim and one of the earliest Muslim members of Congress, has focused on civil rights, religious freedom, and combating discrimination.

He has also played an active role in initiatives addressing issues affecting Muslim communities across the United States.

Muslim and Arab American Representation in Congress

The election victories of Hamawy, Tlaib, and Carson highlight the continued presence of Muslim and Arab American lawmakers in Congress amid heightened scrutiny of U.S. policy toward Israel and the war in Gaza.

Hamawy's election is particularly notable because of his firsthand experience treating Palestinian war casualties, bringing a medical perspective from Gaza into debates over U.S. foreign policy and military assistance.

As their victories were announced, vote counting continued across the United States, with Democrats and Republicans competing for control of the House and Senate during the final two years of President Donald Trump's term.
