Ministry of Social Affairs stated, on Monday, that the number of women victims of socio-political violence reached 358 during 2020.
"The spread of the coronavirus pandemic in the Palestinian lands contributed to increasing the numbers of women victims of socio-political violence as a result of the social, economic, and psychological impacts of the virus," Ahmed Majdalani, Minister of Social Affairs, said in a press release on the occasion of International Women's Day.
Majdalani mentioned that the ministry intensified its efforts to protect the women victims of socio-political violence, and enable them to overcome the harsh conditions in Palestine in light of the coronavirus spread.
The ministry provides those women victims with protection and care through protection centers, according to Majdalani.
He also informed that the number of women victims transferred to protection centers reached 37.
46% of the victims were in their 20s and 47% were married. 40% of the victims were subjected to psychological violence and 30% were subjected to physical violence, harassment, usurpation, economic violence, and forced to marry.
Violence practiced against the women in Palestine led 60% of them to escape home and 17% to try to commit suicide.
