The President of the Arab Parliament, Adel Al-Asoomi condemned the opening of an office for the Czech Republic in the city of Jerusalem, considering the move a blatant attack on the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people.
Al-Asoomi said in a statement on Sunday, that this step represents a flagrant violation of international law and resolutions of international legitimacy, which all affirmed to not infringe the existing historical and legal status of Jerusalem, as it is a city under occupation.
“This step also represents a departure from the foundations of European policy towards the Palestinian cause and explicitly contravenes the UN Security Council Resolution No. 478 of 1980 regarding the rejection of the Israeli government's decision to annex Jerusalem and the prohibition of establishing diplomatic missions there,” Al-Asoomi added.
By this step, Czech also violates Security Council Resolution No. 2334 of 2016 regarding the Security Council's failure to recognize any changes made by the occupying power (Israel) to Jerusalem other than through negotiations.
The President of the Arab Parliament called on the Czech government and parliament to backtrack on this step, which violates international legitimacy.
He stressed that it has no legal effect and will change nothing in the legal and historical status of Jerusalem, as it is one of the final solution issues whose fate will be determined through negotiations between the concerned parties and not by unilateral decisions that contradict the decisions of international legitimacy and international consensus.
