Executive Committee of PLO meets to discuss elections in Jerusalem

Member of the Executive Committee of the Palestinian Liberation Committee (PLO), Wasel Abu Yousef, said that the committee would meet before the end of this week to determine the results of pressures regarding allowing elections to be held in the city of Jerusalem.

Abu Yousef added in a special statement to Safa on Sunday that the meeting will present the results of the efforts and pressures of the Foreign Ministry at the international level to put pressure on Israel regarding holding elections in Jerusalem.

“The executive meeting would decide whether to postpone the elections and the issue is clear about the elections; that is, if elections are allowed in Jerusalem, the elections will be held on time and vice versa,” said Abu Yousef.

Also, he indicated that the committee will call a meeting of the general secretaries of the factions after the meeting of the Executive Committee, as necessary to consult what will be during the next phase.

President Mahmoud Abbas issued a presidential decree to hold elections in 3 stages during the current year: legislative on May 22, presidential on July 31, and completion of the National Assembly on August 31.

Israel did not give any response regarding allowing elections to take place in Jerusalem, which is considered a right for the Palestinians approved by international laws and stipulated in the agreements between the Palestinian Authority and Israel.
