The Hebrew newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported on Tuesday that last May was the "bloodiest month" in the occupied West Bank in 5 years.

The newspaper pointed out, according to the translation of the agency "Safa", that 34 Palestinians were killed in the West Bank by the Israeli army's bullets during the mentioned month, whether by stabbing, trampling, throwing stones or others. It is an unprecedented number since 2016.

It stated that the main focus of the confrontations is currently concentrated in areas south of Nablus, where daily clashes are taking place between young men and the occupation forces around the outpost of "Avitar", which is built on Mount Sabih from the lands of the town of Beita.

For comparison, the newspaper reported that one Palestinian was martyred during the month of April, while no Palestinian was killed during the month of March.

The newspaper indicated that the number of martyrs during the past month is unprecedented, even at the height of the stabbing and ramming operations between 2015-2016, as 26 Palestinians were killed monthly as an average.

It pointed out that these data indicate that the wall of security stability in the West Bank has been broken, turning it into a "very fragile" area.

The newspaper enumerated the reasons for this happening, most notably the Palestinian Authority's loss of its public legitimacy following the cancellation of the elections. Thus, the rise in the popularity of Hamas, as indicated by a recent opinion poll published last week.

It pointed out that the other reasons are the tension in Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque during the last month of Ramadan and the battle in the Gaza Strip.

It stated: "Despite the relative calm that prevails in Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip, events in the West Bank are still at their peak."

As for the centres of confrontations, the newspaper pointed out that the town of Beita, south of Nablus, topped the scene as well as provided 4 martyrs in the last month during clashes around the outpost, in addition to the areas of Al-Fawwar refugee camp near Hebron, the Jericho area and north of Jenin.

As for the act of occupation, the newspaper said that Israeli security has recently strengthened arrests in the West Bank, noting that most of them target Hamas’s activists or those affiliated with it.
