A senior delegation from the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas, headed by Ismail Haniyeh, met with Egyptian Intelligence Minister General Abbas Kamel in a positive atmosphere of mutual understandings.
Both sides addressed several matters at the political and field levels, bilateral ties, and the ways to achieve Palestinian unity and restructure the Palestinian house.
Expressing its gratitude for Egypt’s role towards the Palestinian cause and people and its continuous meetings with the Hamas leadership, the high-profile delegation offers its congratulations to the Egyptian president, government, and people on the anniversary of the 6th of October victory.
During the meeting, they discussed the latest developments concerning the Palestinian cause, in particular, and the region, in general. The Hamas leadership reiterated its constant and stated positions in the context of the Palestinian national liberation project.
Both sides also addressed a number of sensitive issues, particularly Jerusalem, in general, the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, and Israeli schemes and practices targeting the Al-Aqsa Mosque, as well as how to face off the Israeli occupation’s behavior and measures in Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa compound.
The meeting focused on the issue of Palestinian detainees in Israeli occupation prisons, in general, and Palestinian administrative detainees, in particular. The Hamas delegation pointed to the suffering endured by Palestinian detainees in Israeli custody, highlighting the Egyptian role in mediating a prisoner swap deal as the Israeli occupation maintains an intransigent stance on this matter.
The Hamas delegation voiced its appreciation of the steps taken by Egypt towards the Gaza Strip, either in regards to the Rafah border crossing or the measures to ease Gaza’s blockade and take part in the reconstruction process, calling for further similar moves, especially in regards to the movement of people and goods in and out of the besieged enclave.
Both sides talked about how to restore the Palestinian national unity and reorganize the Palestinian House.
The delegation reiterated Hamas’ commitment to restore Palestinian unity and end the intra-Palestinian division, hailing Egypt’s strenuous efforts in this regard.
In light of the failed experience over the past years, the delegation stressed that the right path to accomplishing Palestinian reconciliation is to rebuild the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) and restructure the Palestinian national leadership, ensuring the participation of all Palestinian factions and parties that represent the Palestinians at home and abroad.
Both sides addressed the bilateral relations between Hamas and Egypt. The Hamas delegation reaffirmed its keenness to maintain the strategic relationship with Egypt, given its pivotal role in the Palestinian cause and issues concerning the whole region.
Thanking the Egyptian president, government, and people, as well as the General Intelligence Service, headed by General Abbas Kamel, the delegation restated the necessity to continue consultations on various matters and developments.
