More than 50 British MPs and peers have written to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, urging the government to establish a medical evacuation programme for injured Palestinian children in Gaza. The cross-party appeal, led by Labour MP Kim Johnson, highlights severe shortages of medical supplies and infrastructure in the region.
The letter compares the UK’s past efforts to evacuate injured Ukrainian children to its inaction on Gaza, calling for equal treatment. Other countries, including Italy and Norway, have already implemented similar schemes, leaving the UK lagging behind in addressing the humanitarian crisis.
Johnson described the situation as a “moral outrage”, noting that Gaza now has the highest number of child amputees per capita worldwide. She emphasised that the UK, as a wealthy nation with extensive medical expertise, must act to save lives and stand on the “right side of history”.
The letter comes amid reports that over 14,500 children have been killed by Israeli airstrikes, making Gaza the deadliest place in the world for children. A recent study by War Child revealed that 96% of children in Gaza fear imminent death, underlining the urgent need for intervention.
