UNRWA: Gaza on the Verge of Famine Amid Israeli Blockade

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) has sounded the alarm, warning that Gaza teeters on the brink of famine as severe food insecurity grips the region. For 451 days, the ongoing Israeli blockade and relentless violence have plunged residents into a deepening humanitarian crisis.

Despite tireless efforts by UNRWA teams to deliver aid, the agency admits the assistance is “nowhere near sufficient” to meet the escalating needs. In a series of posts on "X," UNRWA called for immediate international cooperation and an urgent ceasefire to enable the delivery of life-saving supplies.

The food crisis has intensified since the siege began on 7 October 2023, with northern Gaza suffering the harshest conditions. Civilians fleeing south to escape bombings have only exacerbated the strain on scarce resources.

Adding to the misery, Gaza faces a worsening environmental disaster as uncollected waste reaches critical levels. In December alone, UNRWA teams moved nearly 1,972 tons of waste to temporary sites in southern and central areas, but the scale of the problem persists.

Amid continuous bombing, mass displacement, and environmental hazards, Gaza’s population endures unimaginable suffering. UNRWA’s warning underscores the urgency for immediate action to halt what Palestinians describe as a campaign of genocide and ethnic cleansing.
