Since October 7, 2023, Israeli forces have conducted approximately 14,300 arrest operations in the West Bank and Jerusalem. This excludes thousands of detainees from Gaza, many of whom remain forcibly disappeared.
The Palestinian Authority for Prisoners and Liberated Prisoners Affairs reported that 2023 was the deadliest year for Palestinian detainees, with 54 prisoners killed, including five from Gaza in a single day. Among these, 34 were from Gaza and 20 from the West Bank. Prisoner institutions suspect the true death toll may be higher, with information concealed by Israeli authorities.
Raed Amer, Public Relations Director at the Palestinian Prisoner’s Club, warned of worsening conditions inside Israeli prisons, including torture, starvation, and abuse. He emphasised that these crimes could lead to more fatalities unless urgent intervention occurs.
Thousands of Gaza detainees are reportedly held in interrogation centres characterised by torture and inhumane treatment. Israel amended its "illegal combatants" law during the war, further enabling enforced disappearances. Families remain in the dark about the fate of their loved ones, while detainees face the constant threat of death.
Recent testimonies from detainees released from Negev Prison reveal horrific conditions, including the spread of scabies used as a method of torture. Prisoners described enduring extreme cold in torn clothing, being shackled for days, and subjected to beatings, starvation, and abuse.
One detainee, identified as M.R., recounted being held for 82 days, blindfolded and shackled, with no movement or speech allowed. Another, M.H., described enduring beatings, wastewater exposure, and being forced to kneel for days before transfer to Negev Prison, where detainees face "slow death."
The ongoing silence of international human rights organisations exacerbates the plight of Gaza detainees, leaving thousands without accountability or hope for justice.
