The Al-Dameer Foundation for Human Rights revealed disturbing accounts from detainees held in “Anatot” camp, east of Jerusalem, under degrading and inhumane conditions. These prisoners, many of whom were forcibly taken from Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza in December 2024, shared harrowing testimonies that highlight systematic torture and abuse.
According to Al-Dameer, sick detainees were brutally beaten as they were forced to leave the hospital and march toward Al-Fakhoura School in northern Gaza. Along the way, Israeli soldiers used hoses and rifle butts to assault them, while hurling verbal insults. Upon arrival at the school, detainees were stripped, blindfolded, and had their hands tied before being transported in trucks.
In a chilling act of cruelty, prisoners were held naked for hours in freezing weather near Zikim Beach, exposed to brutal conditions that nearly caused death from hypothermia. Once transferred to “Anatot” camp, the torture continued, with detainees handcuffed and blindfolded even while eating, sleeping, or using the restroom. The prison administration also prohibited them from speaking to each other, provided inadequate food, and denied essential medical care.
Al-Dameer underscored that such treatment violates international laws, including the Convention Against Torture, and constitutes war crimes. The foundation expressed deep concern over the deteriorating health of sick detainees, who remain deprived of proper medical attention.
Calling for urgent international action, Al-Dameer urged the International Criminal Court to investigate Israel’s systematic violations against Palestinian detainees. The foundation emphasised that legal accountability is essential to ending the culture of impunity and addressing the war crimes and crimes against humanity committed against Palestinian prisoners.
