The Palestinian Government Media Office has released a devastating new report outlining the immense destruction and loss of life caused by Israel’s relentless military actions over the past 470 days in the Gaza Strip. According to the report, the ceasefire between Palestinian factions and Israel, which took effect last Sunday, marked the end of 15 months of genocidal violence against Gaza’s population, leaving behind catastrophic destruction and a deep humanitarian crisis.
The Government Media Office estimates the initial direct losses from the aggression at over $38 billion, with a destruction rate of 88%. Over the course of the war, Israel dropped an estimated 100,000 tons of explosives, most of which targeted civilian areas. As a result, 46,960 Palestinians have been martyred, including 17,861 children, of whom 214 were infants. The report also highlights the severe humanitarian toll, with more than 110,000 people injured, many requiring long-term rehabilitation.
The report further reveals the scale of displacement, with over 2 million Palestinians forced to flee their homes due to the bombing campaign. The war has also led to an outbreak of infectious diseases, including hepatitis, and has resulted in significant malnutrition, especially among children. The health sector has been devastated, with 34 hospitals targeted and the destruction of over 600,000 meters of sewage and water supply networks, exacerbating the already dire situation.
The impact on Gaza’s education sector has been equally catastrophic, with 137 schools and universities destroyed, and thousands of students, teachers, and academics martyred. The destruction of homes, government buildings, and places of worship has compounded the suffering, while the urgent need for international protection remains a pressing concern for those still in the region.
This report underscores the scale of the Israeli war crimes and the long-term challenges Gaza will face in its recovery. The extent of the devastation highlights the necessity for a just and lasting peace to prevent further suffering and loss.
