Horrifying Testimonies of Palestinians Released from Israeli Prisons

Several Palestinian detainees released as part of a ceasefire agreement in Gaza have spoken about the abuse they endured in Israeli prisons. Despite their release, many expressed mixed feelings, fearing the fragile truce may collapse and they could be rearrested. Israel announced the release of 90 Palestinian detainees, mostly women, teenagers, and children, following Hamas' release of three Israeli women held in Gaza for over 15 months.

Thair Abu Sara, a 17-year-old arrested in the West Bank in October 2023, recounted his harrowing experience. Accused of belonging to Hamas and participating in protests, he described being subjected to daily beatings, electric shocks during interrogation, and being denied medical treatment for scabies for six months. "The conditions were brutal. They told us we didn’t deserve food as security prisoners," he said.

Shatha Jarrar, a 24-year-old biology and chemistry student, was detained in August for alleged incitement on Facebook. She revealed that she was denied medication for insulin resistance and placed in a cell with cameras monitoring the toilet. "I chose not to eat or drink for three days to avoid using the toilet," she shared. She also witnessed guards violently restraining other female prisoners.

Families of the detainees face restrictions and ongoing fears. Thair’s family reported being forbidden from celebrating his release and worry about his potential rearrest. "We weren’t allowed to have visitors or celebrations. Now, we fear the police might raid our home again," said his brother, Naeem.

Shatha’s father, Nawwaf Jarrar, lamented that his daughter was imprisoned for expressing her opinions, with two of his sons still detained. "The entire Palestinian people are prisoners," he said, calling on the world to support their struggle for peace and freedom.
