Senior Hamas commander appears on video despite Israeli claim he was killed

Hamas commander Hussein Fayyad, who was reportedly killed by Israeli forces last May, reappeared in a newly surfaced video. The footage, shared widely on social media, shows a man resembling Fayyad speaking at a funeral in northern Gaza, standing among the ruins of a bombed building.

In his speech, he praised Gaza’s resistance against Israel, saying that while the strong may be defeated when they fail to achieve their goals, the weak, which stops the strong, is the true victor.

He also dismissed Israel’s military assault as futile, stating that Gaza remained unbreakable.

The Israeli forces initially claimed in May that Fayyad, a senior commander of Hamas's Qassam Brigades and head of the Beit Hanoun Battalion, was killed in an underground operation in the Jabaliya area.

According to their statement, Fayyad was responsible for coordinating anti-tank missile and mortar attacks on Israeli territory. However, after the video emerged, the Israeli forces admitted that their claim was based on flawed intelligence and acknowledged that Fayyad's death had only been “highly likely.”

Fayyad’s reappearance casts doubt on the credibility of Israel's claims regarding its battlefield successes. His battalion, initially considered one of Hamas’s weaker factions, proved to be a formidable force, engaging in guerrilla warfare that led to significant casualties for Israeli soldiers, especially in January 2025.

The situation highlights the challenges faced by Israeli forces in countering Hamas's military operations in the region.
