The Israeli army has forcibly displaced nearly 75% of the 15,000 residents of the Tulkarem refugee camp in the northern West Bank amid an ongoing military assault, a local official reported on Monday.
Faisal Salama, head of the Popular Committee for Services in the camp, described the situation as "extremely difficult," stating that thousands have been forced to flee to the city of Tulkarem and nearby towns. He also highlighted the dire humanitarian conditions, as Israeli forces have blocked the entry of medicine, food, and essential supplies while shutting down a Red Crescent Society office, depriving residents of medical services.
The assault on Tulkarem follows a deadly Israeli operation in Jenin and its refugee camp on 21 January, which killed at least 26 Palestinians. The offensive then expanded to Tulkarem, where at least three more Palestinians were killed.
This escalation in the West Bank comes just days after a ceasefire and prisoner exchange deal took effect in Gaza on 19 January. Since the beginning of Israel's war on Gaza in October 2023, more than 900 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank by Israeli forces and settlers, while over 47,500 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, leaving the enclave in ruins.
