Israeli Court Sentences Child Mohammed Zolbani to 18 Years in Prison

An Israeli court has sentenced 15-year-old Jerusalemite Mohammed Basal Zolbani to 18 years in prison for allegedly carrying out a stabbing attack at the Shuafat refugee camp checkpoint in occupied Jerusalem.

Zolbani was arrested on February 13, 2023, when he was 13 years old, after being shot by Israeli forces while aboard a bus at the camp entrance.

During the court session, the brother of the soldier who was killed by a fellow soldier in the bus attempted to attack the child physically and threatened him multiple times. In November 2023, Israeli authorities demolished his family's home in Shuafat and arrested his parents and brother.

In November, the Israeli Knesset approved a law allowing the detention of Palestinian children as young as 14 and imposing prison sentences on them. According to prisoner rights organizations, Israel currently holds over 270 Palestinian children in its prisons.
