The Prisoners' and Freed Prisoners' Affairs Authority has condemned the "tragic" conditions faced by Palestinian detainees in Shatta prison, detailing severe abuses and neglect. In a statement released on Thursday, the authority outlined a series of human rights violations, including brutal beatings, frequent use of tear gas, and inadequate food provisions.
Detainees are routinely subjected to physical abuse by prison guards, with many enduring severe beatings and constant exposure to chemical irritants. The food provided is reportedly raw and unsalted, worsening their plight. Medical negligence is another critical issue, with sick detainees denied proper care. Walid Muslim, detained since September 2024, suffers from untreated psoriasis, while Fadi Raddad experiences persistent pain from injuries sustained during a brutal assault by guards, with no medical attention provided despite repeated requests.
As Ramadan approaches, detainees have raised concerns about their ability to practice religious rituals. They demand accurate schedules for fasting and prayer times, as well as better access to copies of the Quran, as only one copy is currently available per room.
The detainees have called on relevant authorities and humanitarian organizations to intervene, urging the prison administration to improve living conditions, including healthcare, nutrition, and respect for religious rights. The Prisoners' Authority has also appealed to the international community to pressure Israeli authorities to adhere to international standards for prisoner treatment, emphasizing that the current situation constitutes a grave violation of human rights.
This report highlights the ongoing suffering of Palestinian prisoners under Israeli occupation and underscores the urgent need for advocacy and action to address these systemic injustices.
