Raed Amer, Director of International Relations at the Palestinian Prisoners Club Association, has condemned the conditions inside Israeli prisons as “terrifying and deeply alarming,” highlighting widespread abuse and inhumane treatment of Palestinian detainees.
Amer revealed that testimonies from recently released prisoners and lawyers have unveiled horrifying details about daily life behind bars. These accounts, backed by human rights organisations, describe a system rife with mistreatment, humiliation, and denial of basic rights for both male and female detainees.
The Palestinian Prisoners Club has been working to raise international awareness of these violations. A recent report covering the first half of 2025 outlines what Amer called “extremely dangerous findings,” documenting Israeli policies of torture, starvation, and psychological degradation. He pointed to Israel’s own admission that 73 Palestinian prisoners have died under torture, deaths which, he stressed, amount to executions. “This figure doesn’t even include those from Gaza who were executed,” he added.
Amer noted that more than 18,000 Palestinians have been arrested in recent months. Around 11,000 remain behind bars, with nearly half held under administrative detention, imprisoned indefinitely without charge or trial. Among the current detainees are 50 women and approximately 40 journalists.
The situation, Amer warned, is not just a violation of individual rights, it is a deliberate policy of collective punishment and suppression that demands urgent international intervention.
