US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Saturday that he had signed a declaration to expedite the delivery of military aid to Israel, valued at approximately 4 billion. Rubio stated that the Trump administration, which took office on 20 January, has approved arms sales to Israel totalling around $12 billion since its inauguration.
He emphasised that the US would continue to use all available tools to uphold its unwavering commitment to Israel’s security, including measures to address emerging threats. The announcement coincides with the Trump administration’s decision to revoke conditions imposed by its predecessor, Joe Biden, which had placed restrictions on military aid and arms sales.
This marks the second time in a month that the Trump administration has declared an emergency to fast-track arms sales to Israel. Notably, the Biden administration had also invoked emergency powers in the past to approve arms deals without congressional review, a move that drew criticism from some lawmakers and human rights groups.
Last week, the Trump administration further repealed a Biden-era order that required reports on potential violations of international law related to US weapons supplied to allies, including Israel. This decision has sparked debate, with critics arguing that it undermines accountability, while supporters claim it streamlines support for key allies.
The accelerated aid and policy shifts come amid ongoing tensions in the region, underscoring the US’s strategic focus on bolstering Israel’s military capabilities.
