"Systematic Oppression": UN Expert Decries Israel’s Actions in West Bank as Illegal

Francesca Albanese, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, has strongly condemned Israel’s actions in the West Bank, describing them as “shameful and illegal.” She accused Arab nations of complicity in allowing these violations to persist and called for urgent international intervention to address the escalating crisis.

Albanese highlighted Israel’s systematic efforts to expand control over Palestinian territories, drawing parallels between its operations in the West Bank and its previous actions in Gaza. She emphasised that the events of October 7, 2023, cannot justify Israel’s ongoing aggression, including its renewed military campaigns in Gaza and its harsh treatment of West Bank residents. Despite no direct attacks from the West Bank, Palestinians there face violence and restrictions comparable to those in Gaza, underscoring the failure of both the international community and Arab states to act decisively.

The rapporteur criticised Israel for imposing severe restrictions on Palestinians, including denying access to water resources and limiting religious freedoms. She noted that Palestinians under 55 are barred from praying at Al-Aqsa Mosque during Ramadan—a clear violation of their rights. Albanese reiterated that Israel has no legal claim to the West Bank, Gaza, or East Jerusalem, urging it to either withdraw its forces and dismantle settlements or comply with its obligations as an occupying power.

Albanese also directed criticism at the Palestinian Authority, describing it as disconnected from its people. She argued that the divided international community, rather than Palestinians, bears responsibility for the deteriorating situation. While praising countries like South Africa, Spain, and Namibia for taking concrete steps against Israeli policies, she lamented the limited efforts of Arab states, which have focused primarily on Gaza’s reconstruction rather than addressing broader injustices.

On the ground, Israeli military operations continue to devastate Palestinian communities. The Nur Shams refugee camp in Tulkarm has faced extensive destruction, displacing thousands of residents. Similarly, Jenin refugee camp is undergoing its largest military operation since 2002. These campaigns have resulted in civilian casualties, mass arrests, and widespread displacement, leaving entire neighbourhoods uninhabitable.

Albanese called for unified global pressure to hold Israel accountable and protect Palestinian rights. Her remarks underscore the urgent need for Arab nations and the international community to prioritise justice and peace in Palestine. Without decisive action, the cycle of violence and suffering threatens to deepen further.
