Famine Fears Return as Gaza Siege Tightens

The threat of famine haunts Gaza once again as Israel’s blockade on aid, fuel, and commercial goods enters its 11th day. Still reeling from months of starvation during the war, Gazans now face empty markets, soaring prices, and the closure of vital crossings like Karam Abu Salem. Long queues form outside bakeries, where people wait hours for a piece of bread, while bakeries in Khan Yunis shut down due to cooking gas shortages.

“No shelter, no food, no drink,” says a Palestinian woman, capturing the despair of families struggling to survive. Over 80% of Gaza’s 2.4 million people rely on humanitarian aid, but the blockade has cut off essentials, leaving many without income to afford even basic items like potatoes, now priced at $2.5 each.

The healthcare system is collapsing, with medicine shortages endangering thousands of patients. Over 10,000 bodies remain trapped under rubble as heavy machinery is banned, and fuel shortages threaten to halt hospitals and essential services. With 1.5 million homeless and exposed to freezing temperatures, Gaza’s people endure unbearable conditions without water, food, or electricity.

The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor accuses Israel of using starvation as a weapon of war, while UNRWA condemns the aid blockade as a violation of humanitarian principles. For Gaza, the crisis is a fight for survival—and dignity—amid unimaginable suffering.
