War Rages On in Gaza’s Border Areas Despite Ceasefire

Since the ceasefire agreement took effect on January 19, Israeli forces have continued to kill and injure Palestinian civilians in Gaza’s border areas daily, according to a report by Mondoweiss. The report highlights the story of Israa Al-Mughni, who stands amidst the rubble of her home in Gaza City’s Al-Shuja’iya neighborhood, as Israeli drones buzz overhead.

Al-Mughni’s brother was killed last Monday in an airstrike targeting civilians near a water distribution point. “The war hasn’t stopped; on the contrary, it has worsened,” she says, describing the constant gunfire, shelling, and explosions that plague the area. “My brother went out to fetch drinking water, and he was killed while trying to provide for his children. How can the war be over when my brother has been killed?”

For residents of Gaza’s border regions, the war never ended—only the pace of killings has changed. Al-Mughni explains, “We face death at every moment—in our homes, in the streets, and even in the places we go to get water and food.”

On Wednesday, the Ministry of Health reported that seven people were killed in Gaza within 24 hours, including three siblings from the Hamad family in an airstrike on Al-Bureij refugee camp. Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem condemned these attacks as “an extension of the genocide” and called on international mediators to pressure Israel to stop its aggression.

In northern Gaza, Umm Rifaat Habib from Jabalia describes living in constant fear. “We have been living in a continuous war for over a year and a half. Every day, we witness gunfire, rockets, and drones targeting civilians,” she says. “We are tired of death, bombings, and fear.”

In Rafah, over half the population remains displaced, unable to return home due to Israeli attacks. Mohammed Saqr, a resident of Yibna refugee camp, says, “Bullets fly over our heads, sometimes striking the walls next to us. We have been living in fear for more than a year and a half.”

Despite Israel’s claims of a ceasefire, Palestinians in Gaza continue to endure relentless violence. As Al-Mughni poignantly asks, “When will this end?” For now, the war rages on, leaving death and devastation in its wake.
