Gaza’s Sewage System on the Brink of Collapse

Gaza’s sewage system is in a state of disaster, with over 190,000 cubic meters of wastewater flooding streets and 185,000 meters of sewage lines destroyed, according to Eng. Maher Salem of the Gaza Municipality. The Israeli blockade has prevented the entry of essential materials like pipes and machinery, leaving the system nonfunctional and posing severe health risks.

Salem warned that rising temperatures and stagnant wastewater in the Sheikh Radwan Pond could lead to widespread diseases. Only three of 40 waste collection vehicles remain operational, and rubble clogs streets, overwhelming cleanup efforts.

He called for international pressure to lift the blockade, stressing that without immediate action, Gaza faces a humanitarian catastrophe. Over two million Palestinians are at risk as the sewage and sanitation systems near total collapse.
