The recent escalation of violence by Israeli forces in Gaza has sparked outrage and condemnation, as the death toll among civilians, particularly children, continues to rise. Palestinian voices, including those of human rights advocates, have decried the attacks as a systematic campaign of violence aimed at crushing resistance and inflicting unbearable suffering on the Palestinian population.
Since the renewed offensive began last week, over 700 civilians have been killed in Israeli airstrikes, with children accounting for a staggering 70% of the victims. Hundreds more have been injured, many with life-altering wounds, as hospitals struggle to cope with the influx of casualties amid severe shortages of fuel, medicine, and essential supplies.
Ayed Abu Qutaish, of Defense for Children International Palestine, has condemned the attacks as a blatant violation of international humanitarian law. "The targeting of civilians, especially children, is not accidental but a deliberate strategy," he stated. "This is a war crime, plain and simple."
The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has been further exacerbated by Israel's blockade, which has cut off access to food, water, and medical supplies. Abu Qutaish described this as a calculated use of starvation as a weapon of war, aimed at breaking the will of the Palestinian people. "This is not just negligence; it is a policy of collective punishment and a crime against humanity," he said.
The international community’s inaction has drawn sharp criticism. Despite overwhelming evidence of war crimes, major powers, particularly the United States, continue to provide political and military support to Israel, shielding it from accountability. Abu Qutaish called on the global community to take immediate action, including halting arms transfers to Israel, reopening crossings for humanitarian aid, and establishing mechanisms to hold Israeli officials accountable for their actions.
"The world cannot remain silent while children are killed and starved," he said. "The time for action is now. Failure to act will only deepen the tragedy and leave a legacy of impunity and suffering for generations to come."
As the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza worsens, the voices of Palestinians and their advocates grow louder, demanding justice, protection, and an end to the violence that has claimed so many innocent lives.
