Germany has voiced strong condemnation of Israel's recent assassinations of journalists in the Gaza Strip, including the latest victim, Hossam Shabat. In a press statement on Wednesday, Christian Wagner, spokesperson for the German Foreign Ministry, underscored the vital importance of press freedom, asserting that "attacks on journalists cannot be justified."
Wagner highlighted the perilous conditions faced by journalists in Gaza, stating, "The situation is catastrophic and extremely dangerous for both civilians and journalists." He reiterated calls for the Israeli government and all involved parties to urgently return to a ceasefire and pursue a political resolution to the ongoing conflict.
The condemnation follows the Israeli occupation army's killing of Mohammed Mansour, a correspondent for Palestine Today TV, in an airstrike on a residence in the Batan Al-Sameen area near Khan Yunis. Shortly thereafter, Hossam Shabat was also targeted and killed in an airstrike on his vehicle in northern Gaza.
According to the Government Media Office, the toll of journalists killed since the onset of the ongoing violence has tragically reached 208, highlighting the severe risks faced by media professionals in conflict zones.
