Morocco: Protests oppose the normalization of relations with Israel

Hundreds of Moroccans denounced Morocco's normalization of ties with Israel last week.

President Donald J. Trump announced that Israel and Morocco had agreed to resume full diplomatic relations on Dec. 10. Additionally, Trump stated that he signed a proclamation recognizing Moroccan sovereignty over the disputed territory of Western Sahara.

Human rights activists in the Moroccan National Action Group to support the struggle of the Palestinian people hold an emergency meeting, immediately after the royal announcement of the normalization of relations with Israel.

The Islamic Moroccan opposition group "Justice and Charity" strongly condemned on Friday evening, the the authorities ’decision to normalize relations with the usurping Zionist entity of the land of Palestine, stressing that the decision is inconsistent with the historical positions of the Moroccan people in support of their Palestinian brothers.

Meanwhile, the opposition Moroccan left-wing Progress and Socialist Party announced its rejection of the step of normalization with the Israeli entity without being paralleled by any progress on the path to the Palestinian people achieving their rights.

Morocco has become the fourth Arab state in 2020 to agree to resume diplomatic relations with Israel following the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, and Sudan. While Morocco and Israel will begin diplomatic liaisons in Tel Aviv and Rabat immediately, the two countries will open consulates and embassies at a later date. Morocco has also agreed to grant overflights of its airspace and direct commercial flights to and from Israel for all Israeli citizens.
