In the Belgian city of Ghent, a group of activists has begun a five-day hunger strike, calling on their government to immediately sever all military, diplomatic, and economic ties with Israel amid its ongoing assault on Gaza. Their action, described as a stand of moral resistance, comes in the face of what they and many around the world now label a genocide.
The protest, reported by Flemish broadcaster VRT, is the latest act of solidarity from Belgium, following a similar hunger strike in Brussels last month. Participants will consume only sweetened water, coffee, or tea, hoping their sacrifice sparks wider mobilisation across Europe.
Among them is Father Ludo Vandebot from the Saint Michael Movement, who stated: “It is a moral duty not to remain silent while Israel continues committing genocide in Gaza.” His words echo growing calls across the continent for governments to confront their complicity through arms sales, trade deals, and silence.
Since 7 October 2023, Gaza has endured relentless bombardment, starvation, and mass displacement. More than 194,000 Palestinians have been killed or wounded, with thousands still missing. Despite clear orders from the International Court of Justice, the devastation continues, unchecked and unpunished.
As bombs fall, hunger strikes rise. In the heart of Europe, voices are refusing to eat, because too many in Gaza no longer have the right to live.
