With cameras in hand and truth on their lips, Palestinian journalists have become deliberate targets in Gaza’s blood-soaked streets. The killing of photojournalist Ahmad Salama Abu Eishak, struck by an Israeli drone outside his home, has reignited urgent calls for international action, as the death toll among media workers continues to rise.
The Palestinian National Council and the Journalists’ Syndicate have both denounced the systematic targeting of journalists, accusing Israel of waging a war not only against a people but against the very act of bearing witness. “Israel fears the image, the word, the truth,” said the Council, condemning what it describes as a regime built on erasure, racial discrimination, and calculated misinformation.
With at least 229 Palestinian journalists killed since the start of the war, and dozens more injured or detained, the Journalists’ Syndicate warns of an unprecedented assault on press freedom. “This is not collateral damage. This is assassination,” read its statement. “A policy designed to silence those who dare to reveal the horror.”
Media offices have been reduced to rubble, press vests no longer offer protection, and even global media institutions have struggled to maintain coverage from inside the besieged enclave. Yet Palestinian journalists, often working without flak jackets or foreign protection, continue to report under fire, documenting the destruction with unshakable resolve.
As Gaza’s media voice is drowned in smoke and silence, Palestinian institutions are urging the international community to act, not with words, but with legal accountability. The calls are clear: protect journalists, prosecute those responsible, and stop this war on truth.
