One in Ten Children in Gaza Clinics Suffering from Malnutrition, UNRWA Warns as Crisis Deepens

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has sounded the alarm over soaring malnutrition rates among children in the Gaza Strip, warning that its operations are on the verge of collapse under the weight of the ongoing Israeli blockade and deepening humanitarian crisis.

Speaking from Geneva, UNRWA’s Director of Communications Juliette Touma stated: “Malnutrition rates are increasing in Gaza, especially since the siege was tightened more than four months ago on March 2.” She described the situation as “a sign of children’s bodies wasting away in front of our eyes.”

Since January 2024, UNRWA has screened over 240,000 children under the age of five. Distressingly, one in ten suffers from malnutrition, some cases tragically resulting in death. The agency also warned of a severe fuel shortage, crippling its ability to operate health clinics, distribute clean water, and deliver vital aid.

UNRWA is urging immediate, unhindered access for humanitarian convoys to deliver food, medical supplies, and fuel. “Without these essentials,” Touma warned, “the already catastrophic conditions will spiral even further, especially for Gaza’s children.”
