Canadian photojournalist Valérie Zink has announced her resignation from Reuters, denouncing what she described as the agency’s complicity in justifying the killing of journalists in Gaza. Her decision comes amid mounting criticism of Western media coverage of the war and its reluctance to confront the systematic targeting of press workers.
In a statement, Zink said it had become “impossible to maintain a relationship with Reuters” because of its role in enabling the ongoing assassination of journalists in Gaza, where at least 245 have been killed since the beginning of the war. She stressed that the silence of major media institutions amounts to “direct complicity with the killing machine.”
Her resignation reflects wider discontent with the way Western outlets have reported on Gaza. Human rights groups have repeatedly accused international media of downplaying atrocities, failing to hold Israel accountable, and turning a blind eye to the deliberate targeting of press crews. For many, Zink’s move underscores the growing divide between those documenting reality on the ground and institutions that continue to justify or obscure crimes against journalists.
