Gaza’s South Struggles to Shelter the Fleeing

As the northern districts of Gaza reel under relentless bombardment, tens of thousands of people have sought refuge in the south, only to find already overcrowded camps and temporary shelters bursting beyond capacity. Families arrive with nowhere to go, some forced to return north despite the ongoing strikes, trapped between a city under siege and the impossibility of finding safety elsewhere. Tents stretch to the waterline, and every tide threatens to wash away the meagre protection they offer.
Hospitals and clinics are collapsing under the weight of the displaced. Overcrowding has pushed facilities far beyond their limits, with patients treated in corridors, on floors, and in improvised extensions. Shortages of medicine, fuel, and essential medical supplies mean lifesaving treatments are delayed or denied, while the risk of disease grows as sanitation deteriorates and water becomes increasingly unsafe.
Aid deliveries, though slightly increased in recent weeks, remain painfully inadequate. Damaged infrastructure, ongoing insecurity, and strict restrictions make it nearly impossible to reach those most in need. As tens of thousands of people endure repeated displacement, living in tents, unfinished buildings, and fragile shelters, the spectre of famine, disease, and total collapse looms, revealing the human cost of the relentless offensive.
