Gaza’s Silent Truce: Rising Deaths Expose the Fragility of a Fading Ceasefire

The death toll in Gaza has reached a devastating 68,872, according to medical authorities, with nearly 171,000 people injured since the onset of the genocidal war that began in October 2023. Beneath the ruins of shattered homes, thousands remain missing, their bodies buried under the debris of what were once densely populated neighbourhoods. The figures reveal that even after the ceasefire announced in October 2025, the bloodshed has not ceased; it has merely changed pace.

In the past 24 hours alone, four more Palestinians, including one recovered from beneath the rubble, were brought lifeless to Gaza’s hospitals. Health workers describe their struggle to keep operating amid severe shortages of fuel, anaesthetics, and essential medicines. Many hospitals now function in darkness, powered by makeshift generators that could fail at any moment. Entire medical facilities have been destroyed, while the remaining ones overflow with the wounded, the displaced, and those clinging to life with minimal care.

Across the Strip, families displaced by the bombings endure harsh conditions in temporary shelters that offer little protection against the approaching winter. Access to clean water and food remains scarce, and border crossings remain tightly controlled. Humanitarian convoys, though desperately needed, are routinely delayed or denied entry. The truce, once seen as a promise of relief, has instead become a cover under which violations continue to unfold, leaving civilians to bear the cost of a peace that exists only on paper.

Rights advocates have urged renewed international scrutiny into the destruction of civilian areas and the continuing toll on Gaza’s population. As entire neighbourhoods vanish and countless children remain unaccounted for, the scale of devastation has left deep scars on a society struggling to survive. Without decisive international intervention and accountability, the so-called ceasefire risks becoming another chapter in a long pattern of broken promises and unpunished atrocities.
